I am co-editor of the ORTESOL newsletter (Oregon Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).
My goals in publishing are:
- to be the first copy editor in space... and to return safely to Earth!
- to take every opportunity to build on the lessons I have learned from the Masters in Publishing and my past work.
- to help sustain and enrich a world that reads books.
- to appreciate good writing in all its forms.
- to pursue perfection.

En dashes: the hidden dangers

Reverently, I quote from The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition:

EN DASH

6.83 En dash as “to.” The principal use of the en dash is to connect numbers and, less often, words. In this use it signifies up to and including (or through).

For the sake of parallel construction the word to, never the en dash, should be used if the word from precedes the first element; similarly, and, never the en dash, should be used if between precede… Continue
